Florence is a small city with a nightlife to match: more wine bars and squares than clubs, and most of it within walking distance of your hotel. The question is not where the party is, but which neighbourhood suits your evening.

Santo Spirito

The most popular area for a night out, and the one with the most mixed crowd. Bars ring Piazza Santo Spirito; on warm evenings drinks migrate to the church steps.

  • Volume: a bar in an old craftsman's workshop on the square, with live music some nights.
  • Il Santino: a tiny wine bar on Via di Santo Spirito.
  • Rasputin: a speakeasy with no sign; book ahead.

It gets loud late on summer weekends. Residents live above the bars, and police periodically enforce noise and street-drinking rules.

San Niccolò

A short strip of streets under the old city gate below Piazzale Michelangelo. Small bars fill up after sunset when people walk down from the viewpoint. Calmer than Santo Spirito.

Santa Croce

The streets around the basilica are busy with students, especially between Via de' Benci and Via Ghibellina. Cocktail bars and pubs stay open later here than elsewhere in the centre. Locale Firenze, in a medieval palazzo, is the dressy, expensive option.

Sant'Ambrogio

The residential quarter around the market has neighbourhood wine bars and trattorias where most customers are local. Good for a long, quiet evening rather than a crawl.

Near Ponte Vecchio

  • Le Volpi e l'Uva, a calm wine bar on a small square just across the bridge.
  • La Terrazza at Hotel Continentale, a seasonal rooftop with a view of the river and dome. Expensive; book.

Clubs and live music

Florence's few large clubs are mostly outside the historic centre, and names and nights change often. Check current listings and plan a taxi back. Smaller live music happens in bars around Santo Spirito and Santa Croce; look for posters and bar social media.

Practical notes

  • Late-night transport: the centre is walkable; taxis cannot usually be flagged in the street and are found at ranks or booked by phone or app.
  • Prices: drinks cost more at a table and much more on a rooftop.
  • ID: carry ID; some cocktail bars and clubs check.
  • Rules: limits on selling takeaway alcohol late at night and on drinking in some public areas have been applied in recent summers. If staff ask you to stay inside or on the terrace, that is why.
  • Safety: Florence is generally safe at night; watch for pickpockets in crowded squares and on the bridges.
